The Band
Welcome to our virtual home of Root Deco. The core of Root Deco was created by Larry Vilchek and Paul Johnson. Over the decades the band performed under a number of different names until settling on Root Deco. During its development a number of talented people joined or preformed with the band. In the later years the band functioned and performed as a duo, occasionally recording with guest vocalists and musicians.
With roots that run deep into the decaying DC club grind, Root Deco made its mark as an eccentric trio embellishing its blues, country and retro-rock covers with psychedelic, Celtic and Eastern flourishes. Today the influences linger but the music is original. The sound is “decorative roots” or Root Deco. The wry musical vignettes are grounded in hard-won experience and spin the emotional compass from chronic unemployment to the alien agenda.
Root Deco's music was constantly evolving but firmly rooted in concepts of early rock bands that grew out of American rhythm and blues and early rock and roll. We strove to create well-crafted songs that included diverse ethnic influences and experimental elements. We hope you have found something in our material to inspire you.
In October 2024 Larry Vilchek passed away. Larry was the creative musical storyteller that crafted the music and lyrics for all of our songs and projects. Without him Root Deco has ceased and only continues to exist in the body of work that we have previously created and released. His kindness, creativity, inspiration and friendship will be greatly missed.
